A civil society activist urges authorities to release the youth who participated in a demonstration this week against the government in Juba.

Detaining people for expressing their views is a violation of their rights, says Rajab Mohandis, Director for South Sudan Network for Democratic Elections, Radio Bakhita reports.

He says keeping the youth in prison is against some provisions of laws of South Sudan.

Mohandis says keeping the youth in detention may cause worry to their families and the civil population.

On Wednesday, police spokesperson says a case has been opened against the youth who participated in the peaceful demonstration.

Early this week, media reported that the number of people arrested could rise from five to twenty.
