A group of Sudanese non-governmental organizations asked the authorities in Juba and Khartoum to beef up security in order to create a peaceful environment for the vote on self-determination.

New Sudanese Indigenous NGOs Network (NESI Network) said in a press release that voter registration could be impeded by the escalating tensions in the Sudan.

NESI Network cited troop movements along the North South borders and the renewed attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Western Equatorial.

It added that there is an increasing number of cases of intimidations of southern Sudanese residing in the north by the Khartoum administration.

The 77 NGOs belonging to NESI urged the supporting the possible voluntary repatriation of southerners who may wish to return to the south due to the volatile situation in the north.

They also asked Khartoum to ensure the fundamental rights and freedoms of southern Sudanese residing in the north.
