The Swiss government planed and financed a project to improve water distribution in Aweil to serve its growing population.

The Swiss Cooperation for International Development (SCID) financed the four million US Dollars project after assessing the impact of returnees and IDPs on the limited water facilities available in the area.

SCID logistician Hugo Gisler told SCR News today in Juba that Aweil is a transit area for hundreds of internally displaced persons and returnees with very poor water facilities.

Mr. Gisler said that the water project aimed at helping Aweil residents to improve hygiene and their livelihood.

He added that SCID would ensure government staff and the community were trained to maintain the water boreholes and keep them in working condition.

Mr. Gisler admitted there were many logistic challenges to complete the project, including the transport of all necessary materials to Aweil, in Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
