The head of the UN Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS praised the peacekeepers for a rescue operation following the crash-landing of South Supreme Airline at Wau airport on Monday.

The plane, an Antonov 26 belonging to South Sudan Supreme Company, flying from Juba to Wau crashed at 3:40 PM and immediately caught fire.

Reports said there were 43 passengers with six crew members on board.

David Shearer said the Mission peacekeepers participated with firefighting equipment and medical staff alongside local emergency personnel.

The UN Mission stands ready to assist the people of Wau, he promised.
