Eastern Equatoria women formed an alliance to work for a peaceful conduct of the referendum.

The alliance formed last Saturday comprised of six committees set to pursue different activities, Emmanuel Radio reported.

About fifty women were selected from the eight counties of the state to attend a two-day training on the referendum in Torit.

Eastern Equatoria acting governor, Otim Peter Karlo, said at the closure of the event, that members of the Women Alliance for the Referendum should share the knowledge they acquired with their counterparts in the rural areas.

Mr. Otim stressed that the Alliance should not focus on women alone but include men in its activities.

He emphasized the importance of teamwork within the alliance saying it would enhance the referendum results in Eastern Equatoria.

The formation of Women Alliance for a Peaceful Referendum was spearheaded by Southern Sudan Women Network (SSWN), a Canada based organization that aims at creating a network of women in Southern Sudan.

SSWN Programme Manager Kevina Abee said the objective of the association was to mobilize women for a peaceful conduct of the upcoming referendum.
