Uganda has more South Sudanese refugees than the total number of refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean into Europe, says the Secretary-General of Norwegian Refugee Council or NRC.
The number of migrants to Europe is 362 thousand only, says Jan Egeland.
But, some 489 thousand South Sudanese refugees fled to Uganda in 2016 alone, he observes.
Currently, Uganda is hosting more than 640 thousand refugees from South Sudan.
Egeland says renewed violence in July last year in Juba forced hundred thousands of people to flee.
Bidibidi Refugee Settlement in northern Uganda established less than six months ago is already one of the largest refugee camps in the world, the NRC official says.
The camp accommodates over 270 thousand South Sudanese equivalent to the whole population of Newcastle in the United Kingdom, he adds.
2016 refugee aid response plan for Uganda was only 36 percent funded, leaving families of refugees without clean drinking water and children without school.
86 percent of the South Sudanese refugees in Uganda are women and children.
The number of refugees from South Sudan in Uganda is expected to increase to 925 thousand by the end of 2017.
