Religious leaders representing different Churches in Lakes State gathered on Saturday at Rumbek’s Freedom Square for an ecumenical prayer service for a peaceful referendum.

Catholic bishop Caesar Mazzolari of Rumbek spoke on behalf of the religious leaders.

He urged the people of Southern Sudan to accept Jesus as the “only source of lasting peace”, explaining that Jesus came into the world to re-establish harmony.

Bishop Mazzolari said through his cross Jesus broke down conflict and division, restoring unity.

He urged the Sudanese people to cross out the temptation of revenge and hatred adding that in preparation for the referendum, people needed to remain obedient to the culture of Christ who advocated for peace and forgiveness.

Different church leaders prayed during the occasion, imploring the Spirit of God upon the people of Sudan to conduct the historical referendum in peace.

The event was organized by the heads of local churches, including the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, Episcopal Church of Sudan, Pentecostal Church and Baptist Church.
