The government of Eastern Equatoria conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and the UK government for the untimely death of a British citizen in Kapoeta County during a demining operation.

Stephen “Darby” Allan, 52, a former diver with Great Britain’s Royal Navy working for Mine Advisory Group (MAG), died from his wounds a few hours after an explosion last week.

State minister for Information and Telecommunications, Nasike Allan Lochul described the deceased as a great person who endangered his life while attempting to protect people of Eastern Equatoria.

Ms. Nasike said Kapoeta County commissioner confirmed that Mr. Allan’s death was an accident due to some technical error and not an intended incident.

The UN demining agency is investigating the causes for the accident.
