Cabinet opposes National Budget over raising university fees

The cabinet has opposed the National Budget for fiscal year 2016/ 2017 over contentious issues including raising public universities’ education fees.
 
Government Spokesperson, Michael Makuei Lueth says the budget imposes too high tuition payments for university students.
 
The cabinet has directed the concerned ministries of higher education and finance to address the disagreement before presenting the approved budget for signing by the president.
 
The National Legislature approved the budget of 38.1 Billion Pounds last Friday in an extraordinary session.
 
The spokesperson says the cabinet has also directed the Ministry of Education to pay special attention to girls’ education following their low performance in last year’s national exams.
 
The Ministry of Education has also been directed to establish secondary schools in the newly created 28 states, the official says.
 
He observes that some of the newly created states do not have even a single secondary school.
 
The Government Spokesperson was briefing journalists on Friday after a cabinet meeting chaired by First Vice President Taban Deng Gai.
