Women at more risk in conflict situations

Women and girls are in more danger in conflict and emergency situations than their male counterparts, says European Commission.

The Commission on the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women this Friday says women and girls in conflict situations are exposed to violence, extortion, trafficking, exploitation and other forms of gender-based violence.

In South Sudan, women and girls lead the population of forced displacement and refugees across neighbouring countries.

During July violence in Juba this year, several women were reportedly raped by military men.

The most outspoken incident of rape was that at Terrain Hotel Compound where women from overseas were the survivors.

Yet, most women are the source of survival in conflict situations in South Sudan.

They take courage to prepare meals or run with some takeaway food for family members amidst thunderous shooting.

The European Commission says it will continue investing in women and girls whose rights are violated across the world.
