The World Health Organization or WHO says it has strengthened disease detection and response in South Sudan to help prevent further spread.

WHO Representative in South Sudan, Abdulmumini Osman in a statement in Juba on Tuesday said they are working to detect and respond to diseases outbreaks.

He said WHO helped to identify, investigate and respond to 49 disease outbreaks including cholera, measles, viral hemorrhagic fever, malaria and hepatitis E virus.

The efforts included the training of more than 1,300 health workers in disease detection, outbreak investigation and response, the statement added.

“South Sudan is a challenging work environment because of insecurity and a limited ability to access some of the country’s most vulnerable people,” said Osman.

He said infectious diseases pose a major public health challenge and cause significant levels of illness, disability and death in South Sudan.

WHO estimates that 12.3 million people in South Sudan are at risk due to diseases outbreaks.
