Regional and international actors such as IGAD, the United States of America and the UN respond to South Sudan’s crisis lack urgency and political will, says a South Sudanese Professor at Fordham University, New York City.

Professor Amir Idris, in an opinion, says USA has not yet figured out an effective strategy to advance the core principles of democracy, human rights and development in the country.

He says the international donors and development agencies have created a dictatorial government with a large military and security apparatus in South Sudan.

IGAD is a weak political organization operated by unfunctional leadership struggling to overcome its own internal political and economic challenges, says Professor Idris.

The absence of credible IGAD leadership and lack of effective regional strategy to respond to South Sudan’s crisis, have derailed the implementation of the peace agreement, the Professor points out.

Professor Idris says the UN Security Council has been unable to send in Regional Protection troops to South Sudan due to President Salva Kiir’s refusal to cooperate.

Calls for arms embargo against Juba regime have also been resisted by Russia and China as permanent members of the UN Security Council, says the professor.

Professor Idris says the international community must act fast to avert a potential danger of increasing conflict on ethnic dimension in South Sudan.
