Gender inequality, early marriage and household work on girls led to their unequal participation in education, said UNICEF South Sudan Education Manager.

Vinoba Gautam told International Girl Child Day celebration in Juba on Monday that gender imbalance in the education sector is due to conflict, bad cultural practices and early marriage, Radio Bakhita reported.

He calls on authorities and parents to protect girls from early marriage and improve access to education for adolescent girls to increase chances of breaking poverty.

All pastoralists’ communities in South Sudan should go to school to realize development in the future, appealed, Michael Lopuke Lotyam, Undersecretary in the Ministry of General Education.

South Sudan on Monday celebrated the International Day of the Girl child under the national theme: ‘Our girls, our future, reaching full potential through education.’
