Residents who stayed with priests in Lainya were ‘physically toured’ and some of them ‘shot at our eyes’, testifies a priest in Holy Family Parish.

Fr Francis Joseph, Mission Superior of Divine Word Missionaries who serve in Holy Family Parish-Lainya, says one person was ‘badly injured’ and another later died of his wounds, Radio Easter reports.

While speaking to Christians in Yei of the situation in Lainya, he says they have been tirelessly praying for peace.

Fr Joseph says houses of residents staying with them in the church compound were burned and looted.

But he could not identify those who burned and looted the residents’ houses and properties.

The priests in Lainya had been staying with residents who took refuge in their compounds since the clashes between armed group and government forces early July.

Many residents taking refuge in the church compound thought it was a safe place for them, Joseph adds.

However, he says a week later, they started leaving after witnessing looting and shootings against some of them.

The priests have now been taken to Yei after residents who stayed within the compound left.
