Church leaders in Yei River State called on the Transitional Government of National Unity to end violence.
Bishops of Catholic, Episcopal Church of South Sudan and Sudan, Sudan Pentecostal, Evangelical Presbyterian Church and Reconcile Peace Institute met on Saturday and condemned the recent clashes in Juba, Radio Easter reported.
They are concerned of the lack of safety for both lives and property of the people.
Catholic Bishop Erkolano Lodu Tombe at Christ the King Cathedral on Sunday urged the security organs and people with individual interests to respect the ceasefire declared by President Salva Kiir and his First Vice, Riek Machar.
The church leaders strongly condemned the recent shooting of civilians in Yei town which left three people dead.
They call on the government to allow free movement of citizens from urban to rural areas and vice versa.
‘We are deeply concerned and saddened about the recent suffering of citizens who are being washed by heavy rains, sleep hungry without food, often harassed by government soldiers’, read part of the statement.
‘Movement of government soldiers without control, the revenge killings and tensions between ethnic groups and above our children now are unable to go to school due to rampant shooting’, Bishop Lodu continued.
The church leaders urge citizens in the state to embrace peace both at the community and public levels.
