A 12-year-old boy reportedly wounded himself on the chest and thigh while playing with bullets on Wednesday in the area of Ndraffi of Kumbur Payam in Nuba Mountains.
Radio Voice of Peace quoted Osama Alamin Babala as saying he took a bullet, placed in a tin and burnt it to explode at the birds on the tree.
His father, Alamin Babala Avjaja says the explosion happened immediately after returning from Ramadan prayers.
The boy was later operated at the hospital.
Mr Alamin thanked God for the survival of his son and those who rushed the boy to the hospital as he was not around.
Osama said he got the bullet dropped down and took it for hunting birds.
He says he is feeling better.
Voice of Peace could not contact the chief of the area or police for comment on the incident.
