The United Nations Human Rights Council has selected three-member committee to monitor violations in South Sudan to help the process of transitional justice, healing and reconciliation.
Ambassador Choi Kyonglim, the President of the Council on Tuesday announced Yasmin Sooka of South Africa, Kenneth R. Scott of USA and Godfrey M Musila of Kenya to serve as members of the Commission.
Sooka, a human right lawyer, who served on South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission from 1994 to 2001, is the Chairperson of the Commission.
The Commission will observe and report on the situation of human rights in South Sudan and make recommendations for improvement.
It will also establish facts and provide guidance to the Transitional Government of National Unity on justice, accountability, reconciliation and healing.
The Commission will engage with international and regional mechanisms to promote accountability for human rights violations and abuses.
The Commission is scheduled to present a report to the Human Rights Council at its 34th session in March 2017.
