The community of Lelere village in Imurok Payam, Torit County of Imotong State remembers the day the youth lashed two members for failing to construct pit latrines.
Every visitor to Lelere, who admires the hygiene and sanitation of the village is told the story to explain how residents ensure each household has a pit latrine and uses it, Radio Emmanuel reports.
Claudio Isara the areas chief said the two people refused to construct pit latrines for their families and they were each given five strokes of cane.
The chief on Monday told the story to a joint monitoring team from Imotong State, Moon Light Development Organization, Rural Water and Sanitation Support Agency and NIRAS.
He said that the two members of the community were subjected to the punishment for being lazy and not willing to participate in communal work with the rest of their colleagues.
According to chief Isara, the verdict to lash the lazy community members was reached during the peak of hygiene campaign aimed to eliminate open defecation in the village.
Luka Bur, community sanitation facilitator in Lelere, said the village has 43 households and all do have pit latrines.
