The decision made by authorities in Yambio to ban UN troops from conducting patrols in the area, violates the Mission’s mandate; says the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, UNMISS.

Any attempt to prevent the Mission from patrolling is a violation of the agreement between the government and the UN, warns Araine Quentier, UNMISS Spokesperson.

She says the Mission is engaging with the authorities to see how its forces can continue carrying out patrols.

Early this month authorities in Gbudwe State banned UNMISS troops from carrying out patrols in Yambio.

The authorities claim that the heavy arms carried by the UN troops threaten citizens.

UN Security Council mandated UNMISS to protect civilians, investigate human rights violations, create safe environment for humanitarian aid delivery and conduct regular patrols.
