On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the European Union delegation in South Sudan says the principle of an independent, pluralistic and free press is essential for development and democracy in a nation.
The right to freedom of opinion and expression includes freedom to seek, receive and impart information, says Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative.
People need to be fully informed to be able to form an opinion and participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives, Mogherini says.
The EU Representative says freedom of information also contributes to better governance as it enhances transparency in public affairs.
The EU condemns the increasing level of intimidation and violence against journalists, Human Rights Defenders and others exercising the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
Ensuring access to information can promote justice and reparation in an aftermath of grave violations of human rights, Mogherini says.
The EU expresses its commitment to continue promoting and protecting freedom of opinion and expression worldwide.
