The United Nations agencies, World Food Programme, WFP and Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO have again alarmed that the civil conflict and unfavourable rains in South Sudan have further reduced crop production terribly.

There is cereal deficit of 381,000 metric tons, the UN agencies declare as Coast Week reports.

Cereal prices have shot up nearly five-fold since early last year, making it increasingly difficult for people to get enough to eat, decries Farhan Haq, the Deputy UN spokesman.

Some 5.8 million people are insecure of where their next meal will come from, the UN official explains.

The rate of severe food insecurity has now reached 12 percent doubling that of 2015, the UN agencies say.

UN agencies have made a series of recommendations for immediate action to address hunger and strengthen domestic food production in South Sudan.

Above all, the UN agencies say any intervention can only be possible if there is peace and security in the country.
