The United Nations or UN Secretary-General calls for concerted efforts to bring all perpetrators of horrible crimes to justice to end impunity in South Sudan.

Ban Ki-moon reminds South Sudanese authorities to protect all UN personnel and prevent violations against them.

Last year, six UN personnel were abducted and held hostage by non-state actors before being released, he recalls.

20 UN civilian employees have remained in detention, Ki-moon says.

The UN Secretary-General adds that five of their employees are still being detained by member states without any reasons given.

All parties should respect the rights, privileges and immunities of UN personnel, Ki-moon appeals.

All states must also support the 1994 Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel, the Secretary-General urges.

He says the 2005 Optional Protocol extending legal protection to other humanitarian workers must be supported and realized by all member states.
