Find solutions from within to restore economy, JMEC tells South Sudanese

The idea that world powers will restore South Sudan’s economy to what it was is unrealistic, says the head of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, JMEC.

Festus Mogae says oil prices are not reliable for fixing the economic crisis.

A poor economy hurts everyone, but those that suffer most are of course, the poorest, he regrets.

President Mogae observes that the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity will not be enough to ensure international economic assistance.

Help will be dependent on the competence of those who are appointed to key economic management positions, he says.

Time is running out; set aside differences and be courageous enough to make meaningful progress, JMEC urges peace deal stakeholders.

Mogae warns that since South Sudanese are in a deep hole, it does not help them to keep digging the hole deeper.
