South Sudan government has released a group of 75 mixed migrants of mostly Somali origin including 56 men and 19 women intercepted in Aweil and detained in Wau.

A press statement says South Sudanese authorities established that the group had travelled through Kenya, Uganda and then South Sudan with the intention of crossing to Sudan.

The government labels the migrants as smugglers, saying it is the first organized mixed migration movement intercepted in the country.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees or UNHCR and International Organization for Migration or IOM followed the situation closely and sensitized the government about migrants’ rights and right to seek asylum.

The agencies say none of the mixed migrants wished to seek asylum or intended to stay in South Sudan.
