UNESCO says ending poverty requires unity of purpose

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO urges people to unite to end poverty and discrimination with citizens as active agents throughout their own lives.
 
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova in a statement says 2015 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is relevant at a time the United Nations adopts the new global agenda to achieve sustainable development by 2030.
 
The official says the target set in 2000 of halving extreme poverty in the world by 2015 has been reached and that the mission now is to achieve the total eradication of poverty in all its forms throughout the world.
 
The director adds that poverty is a complex reality but not inevitable.
 
The official underlines that women and girls suffer the most and that economic financial crises and conflicts create new poor people in every society.
 
Director Bokova explains that the abolition of poverty is a cornerstone in the fight for human rights and human dignity.
 
The official says quality education for all real possibility for everyone to participate in social transformations and cultural and scientific life are powerful levers for self-esteem.
 
Director Bokova recommends practical ways of creating jobs and revenue generating activities from local expertise.
 
The official observes that through freedom of expression, public debate and information sharing, people can enhance social awareness and political commitment necessary to overcome violence.
