The United States or US welcomes African Union or AU Peace and Security Council decision to release the report of the Commission of Inquiry on South Sudan, describing it a necessary step to address South Sudanese call for justice and reconciliation.
US State Department Spokesperson John Kirby in a statement on Wednesday appreciated the AU Council’s mandate for its Commission to establish the Hybrid Court for South Sudan as provided for by the August Compromise Peace Agreement.
He says the establishment of an independent, credible institution will be vital to end the cycle of impunity that perpetuated conflict in the country and that it is critical for the full implementation of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.
The Spokesperson says the numerous and disturbing reports of abuses and violations by the conflicting parties underline the need for a credible court to try those responsible for the atrocities.
He urges the Commission to work closely with the UN, international partners and South Sudanese to determine the mandate, structure and location of the new court, pledging US readiness to support a credible, impartial, and effective court that provides South Sudanese the justice they deserve.
Earlier US committed five million Dollars to promote justice and accountability in South Sudan, calling on other partners to join them in offering financial and technical support.
