Western Bahr El Ghazal State government on Monday released twenty inmates officially from Wau Central Prison supported by businessman, Makiir Gai, as a rescue initiative to avoid contagious diseases like scabies due to congestion.
Mr Gai said releasing hundred inmates from the prison would help contribute in the development of the country through different aspects especially technical skills, Radio Voice of Hope reported.
He said the initiative is part of his support to peace, appealing to the discharged prisoners to be peace ambassadors and true believers in Jesus Christ in their communities.
Western Bahr El Ghazal State Governor, Rizig Zachariah Hassan, urged local traders to emulate Mr Gai for the betterment of the state and the country at large.
State cabinet, social workers and civil society organizations witnessed the release of the inmates in which some of them expressed happiness.
Former prisoner, Josephina Mangor Akuec, praised Mr Gai and the state government for the gesture, saying she was glad to return home after two years sentence.
Another former inmate, William Deng Mayan, pledged to work for the development and unity of South Sudanese, advising all people to abstain from committing crimes.
87 inmates are expected to be release from Wau Central Prison, 17 from Raja and 26 women are given priority among 592 male inmates.
Wau Central Prison which British government built to host two 250 inmates now accommodates 618 prisoners.
