All indications are that unity has not been made attractive to the people of southern Sudan, states the message of the Catholic bishops of Sudan.
The message, called “A future full of hope”, was issued by the president of the Sudan Catholic Bishops1′ Conference SCBC and Bishop of Wau, Rudolph Deng Majak, on July 22, 2010.

Bishop Rudolph said the public must understand the kind of unity spoken about. If unity is to be made an option, it must be an unity embracing all, in a just, free and open society. He added that a unity which binds, oppresses, and prohibits all opposition, and imposes uniformity must be rejected.

Bishop Rudolph confirmed that SCBC remains deeply concerned that the time remaining before the date due for the referenda, i.e. January 9, 2011, is painfully short and inadequate. He urged those who are leading the referendum process to redouble their efforts to ensure that all outstanding measures are implemented in good time.

He called upon the international community to assist in the technical, logistical and operational stages of the referendum, to monitor and observe the process from start to finish, to guarantee implementation of the results and to mediate in case of any disagreement.

He asked all people of good will to pray earnestly for a peaceful and fruitful referendum
