Torit Catholic Emeritus Bishop Paride Taban on Tuesday in Juba appealed to aid agencies not to forget development in South Sudan.

He explains that some areas of the country are relatively stable and could be supported with development initiatives.

Bishop Taban stresses the need to promote agriculture in peaceful areas and that improving communication infrastructures can help resolve food insecurity in the rest of the country.

He emphasizes that part of the population needs humanitarian support, listing some limitations of emergency aid.

The Bishop argues that assistance stimulates dependency and passive attitudes.

He mentions strategies such as ‘food for work’ as a better way to help the country overcome its challenges to promote citizens’ responsibility, their human dignity and helps ensure aid reaches those who really need it.
