Sudan People’s Liberation Movement or North SPLM-N called on the US President to put pressure on the Sudanese government to end war, allow humanitarian access and achieve democratic reforms in the country.
The call came on Monday as President Barak Obama discussed South Sudan crisis with Intergovernmental Authority on Development or IGAD leaders as they prepare for a final round of peace talks, Radio Voice of Peace reported.
SPLM-N in a statement urged the American President and his administration not to lift economic sanctions before Khartoum stops war to address the humanitarian crisis and ensure freedoms and democratic reforms in the Sudan.
It said Obama should not “allow the Sudanese government to use its engagement with the US to continue genocide, human rights violations, deny humanitarian access, interfere in regional affairs and buy time for the dictatorship”.
SPLM-N also urged African Union Chief Mediator Thabo Mbeki to ensure that Khartoum government is ready to start a genuine process that immediately stop the wars in Blue Nile, Nuba Mountains of South Kordofan and Darfur.
Mr Mbeki is expected to visit Khartoum this week to discuss the resumption of peace talks between the government and the SPLM-N and re-energize ongoing efforts to launch an inclusive national dialogue in the Sudan.
