Western Bahr El Ghazal Police Gender Department refutes claims by a justice group in Wau that police consider rape a normal crime as victims could be left without accountability.

Wau Catholic Diocese Justice and Peace Coordinator Natalina Mambo on Tuesday accused the police in Wau over the media of denying rape victims justice, claiming such cases are normal crimes, Radio Voice of Hope reported.

Lieutenant Lula Karlo, who heads the Police Gender Department, refutes the claim saying no rape case was spared by the police, citing a recent trial where a rape suspect was sentence to 14 years by Wau court.

She laments that several cases were withdrawn by family members as they demand money from suspects, making police work difficult.

Lieutenant Karlo says victims in most cases do not know where to report cases, calling on all police and law enforcement agents to help direct those seeking justice to right places.

The officer says most of the rape cases happening in villages could not be reported because the police units there do not have necessary reporting forms which are only accessible in Wau town.
