United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS refutes an opinion column on The Citizen Newspaper appearing on June 30 and July1 editions alleging that SPLM/A in Opposition forces fired at Internally Displaced Persons or IDPs camp in Malakal this week.

UNMISS in a strong worded statement says there is absolutely no truth to the claims of columnist William Sunday D Tor of ‘shooting at the civilians discriminately in UNMISS camp’ who are from ‘other ethnic groups.’

The Mission says peacekeepers have strengthened security measures in and around Malakal Protection of Civilians site in the wake of heavy fighting that occurred in Malakal, Upper Nile State last weekend.

UNMISS says columnist William Sunday D Tor never attempted to contact them to obtain comment about what it terms ‘baseless rumours’.

The Mission calls on media outlets to refrain from disseminating malicious disinformation seeking to polarize South Sudanese society along ethnic lines.
