The International Committee of the Red Cross or ICRC has warned that urgent action is needed to save hundreds of thousands of people in South Sudan from severe starvation.

In a statement, ICRC says the starvation situation is exceptionally severe in Unity State’s Koch, Mayendit, Rubkona, Leer Counties; Upper Nile State’s Malakal, Melut, Akoka and Longuchok counties and central and northeastern parts of Jonglei State.

The Committee discloses that economic activity is minimal, food prices are rising and basic services are very limited in the areas.

It estimates that more than a hundred thousand people have been forced to leave their homes during the past four weeks due to rise in violence.

ICRC operations for Eastern Africa head Eric Marclay says they have received several reports of direct attacks on civilians and civilian displacement for the second or third time.

Marclay calls on warring parties to respect civilians unconditionally.
