United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs or UNOCHA in its bi-weekly humanitarian bulletin reports that there is a sharp rise in famine casualties due to ongoing military confrontations in South Sudan, warning that about 4.6 million people would be severely food insecure by July.

The humanitarian bulletin stresses need for urgent funding to assist millions of people across the country, lamenting that commodity price rise is worsening the population misery.

The report says violence continues to intensify and spread, posing suffering to hundreds of thousands of people across the country.

It says armed violence reported in Mundri town of Western Equatoria State displaced thousands, now sheltering 15 kilometres away from town under trees.

The humanitarian community calls on commanding officers to ensure protection and respect for civilians, aid workers and their property.
