African Union or AU Peace and Security Council reiterates deep disappointment over the failure of South Sudan leaders to rise above personal and factional political interests and put the national interest and the well-being of their people first.
The Council in its meeting last week in Namibia voices concerns on the escalation of hostilities and the deepening of the grave humanitarian situation on the ground, regretting that the parties again abandoned the path of seeking a peaceful solution.
It strongly condemns the resumption of hostilities and the untold suffering inflicted on the civilian population in total disregard of International Humanitarian Law.
The Council stresses that the actions are wholly contrary to the expressed will of the AU, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development or IGAD, the United Nations and the international community.
It threatens to take the necessary measures against any party that fails to honor its commitments and continues to undermine the search for a negotiated solution.
The Council reiterates commitment to fully support IGAD mediation efforts, appealing to the Member States and international community to urgently provide humanitarian aid to alleviate the plight of the civilian population.
