United Nations Security Council President Raimonda Murmokaité in a statement on Monday strongly condemns the large-scale attack SPLM/A in Opposition initiated on the town of Malakal in Upper Nile State on May 15.

He also condemns the ongoing violence in Unity State caused by the recent government offensive which displaced more than 100 thousand civilians and forced all activities and delivery of aid to populations to be suspended.

The Council underlines grave concern on the magnifying terrible humanitarian crisis where more than 50 thousand IDPs sought shelter at the United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS camps in Bentiu and 25 thousand in Malakal.

The Council strongly denounces repeated violations of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement the government and the Opposition signed on January 23, 2014 as there is no military solution to the conflict.

It calls upon all parties to engage meaningfully in the peace process to end the conflict, calling for renewed regional and international efforts to swiftly implement a common plan.

It reiterates willingness to impose sanctions against those who threaten the peace, security, or stability of South Sudan.

The Council reiterates full support to UNMISS peacekeepers to protect civilians, demanding that all parties end intimidation and harassment against the Mission and humanitarian personnel, cease restrictions on freedom of movement and allow UNMISS to fully implement its mandate.
