The United Nations World Food Programme or WFP in a statement on Friday welcomed European Union contribution of 13.8 million US Dollars to help conflict-affected people in South Sudan.
South Sudan WFP Country Director Joyce Luma says European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department or ECHO contribution aims to assist affected people mainly in Jonglei, Upper Nile and Unity states including protection of civilians’ sites countrywide.
She says the funds would be used to purchase sorghum, salt and specialized nutritional supplements to help prevent and treat malnutrition in children.
The Country Director states that 2.1 million is allocated to WFP-managed Logistics Cluster to coordinate and move relief supplies to all communities in the country.
She adds that another 1.08 million is allocated to the UN Humanitarian Air Service or UNHAS for air transport to relief work as the majority of the country’s roads are impassable during the rainy season from May to October.
The Country Director observes that the European Union is the second largest donor to WFP in South Sudan provided nearly 50 million US Dollars for operations since the crisis started.
