The African Union or AU expresses profound dismay over loss of countless human lives and untold suffering.
AU in a statement on Wednesday lamented that the situation remains extremely fragile and volatile, following sustained fighting last three weeks between the government and SPLM in opposition in Upper Nile region.
It says military activities south of Bentiu, in Unity State forced up to 100 thousand people to flee their homes since the beginning of May alone in addition to over the 1.5 million people uprooted.
The AU warns that more than 2.5 million others are at risk of hunger and diseases as conflict and massive violations of human rights and destruction of property continue to take place.
It describes the tragedy as a dark blot on the conscience of the international community in general and Africa in particular.
AU also laments the warring parties are unwilling to agree on a political framework to end the fighting and the suffering of their own people, cautioning them to know that there is no military solution.
It calls on them to live up to their commitments to end the unnecessary suffering they are inflicting on their fellow South Sudanese.
The AU renews its commitment to continue working with IGAD leadership to find a peaceful and lasting way out of the present conflict in South Sudan.
