The United Nations Mission in Sudan UNMIS said it is ready to support the referendum scheduled for January 2011.
Addressing the press yesterday, David Gressly UNMIS Regional coordinator for southern Sudan said his office is working with the SPLM and NCP on the kind of assistance that UNMIS would provide. Mr. Gressly explained that his office is ready to provide technical and logistic support for the process of the referendum.

Mr. Gressly revealed that UN partners would train about sixteen thousand southern Sudan police service officers in preparation for the referendum.

He added that nearly fifteen hundred police personnel received training on election security last week. Mr. Gressly mentioned that UNMIS is committed to help facilitate logistics and technical preparations for the success of the referendum.

UNMIS facilitated transportation of elections materials to and from their destinations during the last April’s elections.
