United Nations World Food Programme or WFP still requires additional funding amid Japan’s donation of 4.2 Million US Dollars to pre-position sufficient food to South Sudan and reduce its reliance on air operations to reach people in need.
In a statement CRN received on Thursday Japanese government donated 4.2 million Dollars to support emergency response in South Sudan, and its United Nations Humanitarian Air Service or UNHAS in the country.
Japanese Ambassador Takeshi Akamatsu says the contribution is part of the 88 US million Dollars Japan pledged at the High Level Event on the Humanitarian Crisis in South Sudan in Nairobi last month.
The Ambassador said 3.2 million would assist more than 45,700 children and 17,780 women by specialized fortified foods to treat moderate acute malnutrition and prevent those in highly food insecure environments.
WFP Country Director in South Sudan Joyce Luma welcomes Japan’s contribution to pre-position food in areas that would become inaccessible during the rainy season for assisting the most vulnerable mothers and children.
WFP aims to assist 3 million people in 2015, including life-saving emergency assistance for 1.4 million people directly affected by conflict, specialized nutrition support for 485,400 children under the age of 5 and 51,600 pregnant and lactating women.
