Cyprus authorities intercepted a ship suspected of carrying weapons bound for Darfur.

Cypriot officials told Reuters yesterday that the ship carried explosives destined for Darfur.

The official said the authorities were investigating whether the cargo would breach the UN weapons embargo to the Sudan.

The vessel was anchored off the Cypriot port of Limassol since June 11, when it was inspected after requesting refueling.

The U.N. Security Council imposed an arms embargo on Darfur in 2004, one year after rebels took up arms against Khartoum.

In March, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, accused Khartoum of breaking the ban.
