United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO Director-General denounced the killing of five journalists in South Sudan, requesting for measures to improve the safety of media workers in the country.
In a statement CRN obtained on Thursday, Irina Bokova condemned the killing of Musa Mohammed Dahiyah, Butrus Martin Khamis, Dalia Marko, Randa George Adam, and Adam Juma Adam who were travelling in a convoy with local officials in Western Bahr El Ghazal State on January 25.
She said their death is a blow to freedom of information and expression, calling on authorities to ensure that the essential rights are protected so that journalists carry out their work in safe conditions.
The Director said a total of eleven people were killed in the attack by unidentified gunmen.
