A retired catholic bishop urged the Christian community to ask the authorities to rebuild churches that they destroyed during the two-decade civil war.

Retired Bishop Paride Taban of Torit was responding to the recent pledge by the President of the Republic, Hassan Omar Al-Bashir, to reconstruct the catholic church in Kapoeta, Emmanuel Radio reported.

Bishop Paride said that several other temples in the Diocese of Torit were destroyed by the Sudanese army.

Bishop Paride added that the responsibility laid with the Catholic community and not the clergy to demand for the reconstruction of churches that were bombed during the civil war.

The Torit diocese was the stage of heavy fighting to control the garrison towns of Torit, Lafon and Kapoeta.

The conflict virtually destroyed the Church’s infrastructure including education, health, water and sanitation facilities.

The war also destroyed the economic base and caused the disintegration of social fabrics of most communities in Eastern Equatoria State.
