UNMISS urges media to report gender violence ethically

United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS Senior Women Protection Advisor called on media practitioners to ethically report sexual and gender-based violence cases to avoid harming victims.
 
Fatou Dieng Thiam in her remarks at the opening of strengthening media capacity for documenting and reporting sexual violence training in Juba on Wednesday, called on media practitioners to fairly report sexual violence to combat the practice, Radio Easter reported.
 
Community Empowerment for Progress Organization Executive Director Edmond Yakani appealed to the Information Ministry to support journalists break the silence existing in the country as cases of rape are considered political.
 
He pointed out that journalists are denied access to track down cases of rape.
 
Mr Yakani made his remarks while releasing a report on media reporting on rape cases.
 
The two-day training drew 15 journalists from different media houses in the country in Juba.
