The United Nations World Food Programme or WFP in South Sudan is back on air demanding safe release of its staff member Mark Diang who was abducted at gunpoint from Malakal Airport on October 16 by a group of men in plain clothes.
WFP Country Director Joyce Luma’s statement, CRN obtained said they had no knowledge of Diang’s whereabouts and that they are gravely worried and restless about his safety.
She added that WFP is reassessing its security arrangements in South Sudan to ensure staff safety through restricting operations in some areas.
Director Luma said they are seeking renewed security assurances from authorities so that emergency teams can continue providing needed food assistance in communities isolated by conflict.
The Director’s statement reminds the warring parties to protect lives and ensure safety of humanitarian workers under international law.
WFP demands Diang’s abductors to release him unharmed and that authorities should bring those responsible for his disappearance to justice.
