Gender, Social Welfare and Cooperatives Chairperson in Yei Municipal Legislative Council on Tuesday said most women in the country are ignorant of their rights and end up being abused without taking legal steps.
Speaking to Radio Easter after the conclusion of one-day public lecture on women’s rights, Margret Sadia Steven said women also lack knowledge of reporting their dilemmas.
She commended Minyori Agency of Transformation and Development for organizing the public lecture that enabled women to testify their challenges.
The Councillor said they are advocating for women’s rights through formulation of by-laws, gender policies at the state level through civil society organizations.
She called on law enforcement agents to properly implement gender policies and enacted laws to safeguard women rights.
Ms Sadia conveyed condolences to the people of Yei County after losing a veteran leader, Cecilia Oba and her officer manager Emmanuel Lemi in a painful murder.
Minyori Agency for Transformation and Development Program Officer Malish Steven urged the participants to share the knowledge gained with their colleagues, adding that his office is open for more clarifications.
