The UN agency for the infancy called on the government to spend more money in children«s welfare to address problems like healthcare and education and safeguard the future of the country.

The call was made during the commemoration of the Day of the African Child celebrated today under the theme Planning and Budgeting for Children.

In Southern Sudan, children and parliamentarians participated in a TV and radio forum to highlight the need to place children’s issues at the top of the priorities during allocation of public moneys.

Nils Kastberg, UNICEF Representative in Sudan, said children were vulnerable and voiceless, particularly when it came to having access to and control over resources.

Mr. Kastberg added that decision-makers in the government needed to put more money into children√Ǭ´s education, protection and health, including access to safe water and adequate sanitation in order to safeguard the country’s future.

UNICEF said that 3.6 million children in Sudan were currently out of school, mostly due to lack of buildings, shortage of trained teachers and conflicts.
