UNMISS condemns abduction of its staff at Malakal airfield

United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS strongly condemned the abductions of its and World Food Programme staff on October 10 at Malakal airport.
 
In a statement on Friday, the Mission demanded safe release of the missing individuals, calling on the national government to protect UN personnel under the Status of Forces Agreement.
 
It urged the national, state authorities, the SPLA and militia commanders on the ground to redouble their efforts to locate and free the abducted individuals.
 
The Mission said it took additional measures to enhance the security of its personnel and would continue to engage all relevant actors for the release of the abductees.
 
Unidentified armed group of 15 to 20 men in military uniforms and civilian clothes seized three UNMISS contractors working at the airfield in Malakal and drove them away in a pick-up truck.
 
The following morning, one of the three workers was released and a second was also released later in the afternoon, the third worker is still missing.
 
On Wednesday, a staff member of WFP was also seized by a group of armed men at the same airfield while he was in the process of boarding a UN flight and is still missing.
