Yei River County lost about 400 teachers in the 2013 downsizing due to lack of eligible documents leaving many schools vulnerable.

County Education Director Philip Taban told the gathering at Yei Freedom Square on Tuesday marking World Teachers’ Day that some schools were left with one or two voluntary teachers after the downsizing.

He lamented that some teachers recruited in 2013 started withdrawing their documents because of lack of salaries, raising community concerns on education standard of the children.

The Director added that the gap of the downsized teachers remain immensely uncorrected despite several reports to the ministry.

Mr Taban cited few classrooms, untrained teachers, lack of learning space and congestion of pupils and students in classes as some challenges facing the sector.

Central Equatoria Education Minister Hastin Yokwe said teachers training is the responsibility of the national ministry, adding that the state would only provide in-service training.

He announced that the national ministry would open five teachers training institutes this year to achieve quality education.

The officials made the statements while addressing state’s World Teachers’ Day celebration at Yei Freedom Square on Tuesday.
