Eastern Equatoria State minister for Health condemned alcohol consumption by health workers while on duty.

Minister Felix Makucha on Friday cautioned health workers at Torit civil Hospital against drinking while working.

Mr. Makucha emphasized that it was unethical for health workers to drink alcohol during office hours.

He said a healthy and sober mind helped in healing patients more than medicine, adding that drunken staff scared the sick and even worsened their health conditions.

The minister was reacting to a revelation by consultant Sylvester Omini Baala who singled out drunkenness, late reporting to work and absenteeism among the factors contributing to the decline of services delivery at the state-run health facility.

Mr. Baala said that some health officials working under the influence of alcohol manhandled patients in rough manner.
